According to Osen, Samsung electronics is negotiating to acquire MVP Ozone (Team MVP's championship class LoL squad) for a sum in the region of $300,000~500,000. The negotiations are reported to be in the final stages.
Depending on the final conditions, there is a possibility that Samsung will also acquire MVP's SC2 squad, Dota2 squad, and the remaining MVP Blue squad (their other LoL team).
The upcoming League of Legends World Championship is said to be reason for the hasty negotiations from Samsung, as MVP Ozone has confirmed their spot there.
If MVP's SC2 team is " bought " as part of the deal I imagine they would get rid of most of the players and keep the elite few for their main team. MVP sc2 is a huge team right now and I don't see why they would add 20 more players when the kespa teams are all supposedly downsizing their sc2 squads.
So basically we'll lose another sc2 team if this happens.
On September 03 2013 16:52 GTR wrote: that's a lot of money
It's actually pretty smart.
Ozone has four world class players: Imp, Mata, Dandy and dade. They should be an elite team for a long time. They're also a big favorite to go deep and win the entire tournament along with probably OMG and the Korean Regional winner.
Also, unlike KT, CJ and SKT, Samsung is a global brand. What better way to advertise your product and push yourself to the head of the e-sports world than grabbing a team that has a great shot of winning what is going to be the most watched e-sports event of all-time.
Half of that price is actually being paid for the dancing coach!
But anyway this should be easily worth it for Samsung, looking at the record breaking OGN Finals numbers and also the implications that has on the upcoming S3 finals viewership.
Now top 6 or so in KR will be all KeSPA teams though... :O

That's a lot of money from Samsung. Never watched LoL , but I watched MVP won 1st place on a Korean tournaments when I randomly clicked on a featured stream couple months ago
Considering the state of Korean LoL right now, it's a really, really smart purchase by Samsung. MVP while having good players/teams, they aren't a global brand, and don't really gain much aside from winnings and some exposure and some fans.
But for Samsung, it's 300k-500k to reach millions of people, the vast majority of whom fit within a targeted demographic (generally speaking, 15-30 range, mostly male), who also often times have disposable income. Very, very difficult to not have positive ROI on this purchase.
I wouldn't be surprised if MVP ends up selling everything and disappearing though. MVP owner's could potentially walk away with high 6 figures if they sell off everything. Without the championship quality LoL team, brand recognition gets a lot harder, as well as finding sponsors.

They would probably maybe keep up a few of the SC2 players, maybe keep Swagger as an assistant/player coach and cut the rest.

I could see them dropping sponsorship for KHAN or just merging the two squads into 1 team and probably get rid of some of the players( if the 2 teams merged rosters they would have a huge number of players) It probably makes more sense to put the MVP SC2 players on KHAN as it's a more "established" brand you could say

tbh MVP as a straight up replacement for samsung would improve their sc2 squad so much
What if the MVP coaches believe so much in their future, their teams, and their fan loyalty that they will stare Samsung's check books in the face, say that they're too prideful to sell, and turn down the $500,000?

Good news all around.
Well It's only tangibly related to sc2, if the MVP sc2 team comes with the deal they aren't going to keep the 20 MVP players and make a Samsung 2 SC2 team. They would probably take the top 5 or 6 players in Team MVP, add them to Samsung while cutting their weaker SC2 players and letting the rest go.
That would actually be terrible news for sc2, It's one less team and a ton of players suddenly jobless.

But teams are like family. Loyalty, knowing the players, and having built them yourself from your training system. There is also the fact that the players are under contract, etc.
They would probably keep Keen, Super, DRG, and Dream, cut the rest (dukedeok won't help much with Proleague/Korean standing in Europe) and proceed as normal.

I don't think they would replace homme quickly unless he has a disastrous showing at worlds and inhouse. But everybody is going to be watchful, because there's a good chance Samsung will also pick up a couple subs.
Also top lane at the moment doesn't really leave too much room for players to really shine. Far too pick/matchup dependant with current meta/itemization.
Homme actually fits MVP Ozone perfectly. They have four world class players. LoL is exactly like basketball. You can't have three to four people who need the ball on every play. Homme fits into Ozone's system of being a utility Top. Dandy, dade and Imp are the top three options, and he basically gets the rebounds, tanks, and does all the little things that need to be done. Obviously if he was on a team with less options, say a Jin Air Falcons or CTU, then he would be terribly exposed and probably be replaced, but he's the perfect Top for Ozone's composition.

At least the way Homme plays. In comparison to a CJ Flame, Shy or whoever he still pales IMO. But we don't know how much he delivers behind the scenes with strategizing/shotcalling/coordinating, so juding a player at face value always seems somewhat lackluster.
Interesting... with the big shuffles going on in the scene i was thinking about the big companies and their teams. I'd totally be okay if the Korean scene condensed itself to half the current number of teams if it meant more stability and player salaries and stuff. It's also cool to see LoL kind of pushing Starcraft 2 along, even though it'd be nice if it was more self-motivating of course.

Being a global brand, buying Ozone before the world finals and making their debut on the biggest e-sport stage of all-time is a great marketing play.

Yes, same level of play as SKT, KT, and the CJ teams. With the difference that Ozone already have their spot for S3 World Finals secured right now (based on their Spring Championship win and SKT winning the Summer season) and the other KeSPA teams still have to fight for the remaining spot amongst themselves.

Haha but only if you put the Korean top 3 as the top 3 of the world. Which would most likely be true, but I'd see it as possible that the best Chinese team (OMG? iG? I'm bad with the Chinese) could rank amongst them.

SKT/Ozone and then take your pick of Bullets, OMG, CJ's, or even Fnatic/C9 if you want.
Looks like if they acquire SC2 squad as well, they will cut a lot of MVP players, as well as not resign other Khan players to keep the roster size manageable.
I fear the implications of the MVP SC2 squad being bought, I really, really hope that only the LoL team is acquired by Samsung. It would be sad to see most of the SC2 squad of Samsung and MVP culled and probably some players retire if Samsung acquires it.

Samsung is so big compared to the other Kespa teams' sponsors that they could support two teams at a time to double their chances at winning proleague without breaking a sweat. But probably not happening with the state of SC2 esport (somewhat constant, not growing viewership, compared to LoL).
I'm also really interested at what they do with the DotA team, though (it's not as big as LoL, but contrary to SC2, it's growing steadily, and Valve seems to be easier to work with than blizzard, not forcing broadcasters to pay to animate their game and all that). Pretty sure they won't get that much money, but it's 5 players, not 20 like a large SC2 team.
I don't know, 100k per player isn't bad. Seems like a 1 year salary per player being paid straight up (according to rough ballpark figures from Chobra's grilled) solely for the transfer. Should be a very good deal for Samsung with big ROI.
So ozone lose 1-3 to skt and barely win vs frost. Kt bullet on the other hand stomped frost and forcing skt in too a blindpick is ranked lower then ozone seems legit to me.
Interesting, from what I remember Samsung never invested too much in their BW team, even considering how big Samsung is they never spend more on it then STX did to my knowledge(granted STX is pretty big too). This is too good an opportunity to pass up on to though. In order to participate in the LoL Proleague they need a team and why not get the best money can buy you that is not owned by a Kespa team yet, smart move.
$500k is going to be a ton of money for MVP too, I hope they spend it wisely.
Also very much interested in the aquisition of a Dota 2 team obviously but there is not much information yet for that.
Also in b4 Samsung goes full SKT mode and MVP goes full on MBC mode.

500k upfront to MVP + 2013 salary for the players after purchase. This could easily cost Samsung close to 1 million dollars.

Samsung has been sponsoring WCG for 13 years. How many WCG's have been mobile focused?
That's right, 0.
Clearly haven't been paying attention to WCG the last few years.

Usually when Fomos/OSEN/DES etc start posting things as "rumors", it's things that are 99% confirmed or pretty much confirmed. The real rumors are the stuff that's only on forums and such, but things that make it as articles are pretty reliable.
On another note, its amusing cause a lot of ESF SC2 teams went into making teams when SC2 first started in hopes of selling their teams to KeSPA teams later. Nice to see MVP finally making that dream come true.

WCG has mobile games BUT NOT as focused as what you think. Being a WCG follower since day 1, I DONT AGREE on the idea/statement that... "...WCG had been mobile focused." There were NO such thing. Of course WCG will put mobile games because WCG is about gaming on ALL platforms

The whole 'WCG went mobile' was a leaked internal email and even if that email was true, it never actually happened other than promotional titles. But you know, most people just listen to eSports shows and don't actually watch the events so don't know. The last WCG wasn't that bad of an event even.

It's more that Ozone is a top three team probably in the world right now, have a place at the world finals, and have four world class players that still have lots of room to improve.
Being a global brand, buying Ozone before the world finals and making their debut on the biggest e-sport stage of all-time is a great marketing play.
Yes, the advertisement at world's is absolutely nuts and with the quality of MVP Ozone's roster they're going to be relevant in the scene for quite awhile. I really can't see Imp, Mata, Dade, or Dandy slumping anytime soon. More importantly LoL is only going to continue to grow in Korea so the sooner Samsung can get in the better.

Ozone is MVP's biggest team right now. In terms of popularity, bringing in fans, and helping them to get sponsors. If MVP is willing to sell Ozone they might as well make a deal to cash out on all of their teams especially since Samsung likely will want to pick up MVP Blue so that Ozone can keep their practice partners. But who knows, maybe they'll only part ways with Ozone and retain the rest of their teams.
Even though I really really like MVP, I would love to see KHAN getting a Dota team and buying Ozone. Not sure about the SC2 team though.. meh. We'll what happens.

Because if they do that players will be wearing a MVP jersey, not a SAMSUNG jersey. (Which is NOT what Sam. wants) Wearing Samsung jerseys is pretty much a walking advertisement for their brand. Which considering LoL is a global game, having a walking advertisement globally isn't a bad idea.

To add to this, Samsung is going to pay 300-500k+salary for the players, in return for getting global advertising on a targeted demographic(this is really big). You reach a demographic of several million 15-30 year old males(probably comprising 80+% of the total market for LoL esports), who generally have access to disposable income. Compared to what it would cost to run advertisements for the same level of exposure, this is really, really cheap.
I mean they could pay MVP like 100k to become a title sponsor or whatever, and get a badge on the chest of every player. Or they could spend more(still not that much in the grand scheme of things), and just own the team.

This is very true, the amounts of money being discussed are almost literally pocket change for a company like Samsung.
Samsung shouldnt waste money in the SC2 team, they already have one and they even should close it because SC2 aint near the exposure and publicity LoL has. They could save that money and buy the 2nd MVP LoL Team (MVP Blue).
The Dota 2 team should be a good adquisition, but first they should get the LoL teams.

You're looking in the completely wrong place. WCG for proper titles has gotten progressively smaller. Previously, national teams were guaranteed to receive sponsorship for a certain number of flights from the regional Samsung branch. How many players went depended on the regional Samsung branch.
These days for proper pc titles, someone running a national team has to 1. pay for the wcg license for the players 2. find their own sponsors for flights. These sponsors can't compete with Samsung even though Samsung in most countries sponsors nothing anymore. Yet for their ridiculous mobile phone titles, they'll sponsor flights.
You might look at their games list and be all "ah but look, there's still some pc titles there", but they've been progressively scaling it down for years now.

500k upfront to MVP + 2013 salary for the players after purchase. This could easily cost Samsung close to 1 million dollars.
It's a pretty damn good ROI. MVP Ozone is already into world championships, they've already got big name stars in Dade/Imp/Mata and they're a top 3 KR, top 5 world team.
In return they get a couple million views at worlds, with Ozone likely to finish top 4 and huge exposure to a young demographic (15-29) that has a good amount of disposable income.
It's much cheaper than advertising in almost any other medium to a similar audience.

Vertical integration means you can build stuff cheaper than people who aren't as large. Example. Samsung makes TVs. The microprocessors inside, the circuit boards, the power supply, the LCD panel etc. are all made by Samsung. Pick any smaller manufacturer and you have to buy the panel from one manufacturer, electronics from another and there are middleman profits everywhere. Cut out all the middlemen and you can undercut competitors or be more profitable than your competitors.

See Lmui, but also as part of South Korea's growth development since the Korean War, the government worked with and sponsored the development of the chaebols, which has embedded the existence of these conglomerates as integral parts of the South Korean economy. They're less prominent now after the economic/financial crisis in the late 90s as a result of the structural problems of such a system, but there you go.
Or a quick wiki link, if you don't want to look for the academic literature on the subject.
Not even surprised by this. With the way LoL is looking, I bet more prestigious sponsors will come soon. The scene is looking to be even bigger than BW back in the day.

I'm no Chexx, but I spent about a year studying S.Korea at Berkeley.
Essentially, post WWII/Japanese colonialisation and the Korean War, Korea's economy was pretty shit. The S. Korean government essentially backed and subsidized a few select companies (the chaebols), which epitomized the "too big to fail" ideology, in order to grow and industrialize S. Korea's economy (it was pretty rural/agricultural prior to this). This resulted in companies like Samsung expanding into multiple markets and producing a large variety of goods and services. It also helped S. Korea's economy absolutely explode making it one of the "Four Asian Tigers".
However, everything went to shit in 1997 with the Asian market crash, which is a whole different issue, but it basically made chaebols and shit bankrupt since they were so incredibly dependent on the government and the Asian economy's continued growth and good health. A few of them disappeared, but the ones that survived are still huge, albeit smaller than they were.
Edit: Oh yea, forgot to mention. Part of the reason why chaebols grew so damn big was because foreign investors were also really interested and excited about the rising Asian economy and lended absurd amounts to select Asian governments and companies, like S. Korea and the chaebols. This also created a bubble, which eventually burst leading to the 1997 crisis. My explanation is very brief and simplifies a ton of stuff; may also be missing/misremembering some things.
From the wiki page, this section is very important:
Chaebol are still largely controlled by their founding families, while keiretsu are controlled by groups of professional managers. Chaebols, furthermore, are more family based and family oriented than their Japanese counterparts, Indeed, a fundamental difference in the concept of "family members" between the Japanese and Koreans exists, The Japanese concept of family consist of two meanings. One is the concept of family based strictly on blood relationship. The other is the concept of the household or clan which is not only based on blood relationship but also on adoption. The Korean concept of family, on the other hand, is strictly based on blood relationship.
It gets underemphasized often, but Asian business is very family-oriented, and chaebols are the epitome of that. It's easy to grow a big conglomerate when you feel obligated to give every family member a C-level position of something, and then you might as well just combine every business owned by your family into one giant one.
Lots of TL people learned about Korea in school I guess lol, real Starcraft power. I wrote a paper about STX (the corporation) ~_~

Also, unlike KT, CJ and SKT, Samsung is a global brand. What better way to advertise your product and push yourself to the head of the e-sports world than grabbing a team that has a great shot of winning what is going to be the most watched e-sports event of all-time.

It's sort of both. All east asian countries has this 'problem'. It's ingrained in our culture, but is a constant media drawn ire on the topic. Though arguably it's more a focus on abuse of power as opposed to giving family members position of power.
