With the LCS moving to a best of format, LCK games on six days a week and the LPL still churning out games, the competitive scene has become increasingly difficult to keep up with. That’s why I’m reviving my ‘Game of the Week’ series to highlight the best game from all the big regions. With every premier region moving to a ‘best of’ format I’m going to be choosing the best series, but I’ll also name the best game in the series if you’re really pressed for time and can only watch one game.
With all that said, it’s time to reveal this week’s game of the week!
Royal Never Give Up vs. Team WE (Bo3)
Best Game: Game 1
Royal Never Give Up had come off a successful MSI, but that didn’t stop them trying to improve their already impressive roster, picking up superstar Chinese AD Carry, Uzi. Uzi had just come off a disappointing end to his time at QG after the roster fell apart due to a row between Korean duo Doinb and Swift. He’d slowly but surely begun to regain his form during his time on QG, and towards the end of the split looked dominating in some of his performances. His move to RNG solidified them as the top team in China, and this was the first time the roster would play on stage.
Meanwhile, WE had a surprisingly good Spring split performance, finishing 3rd after defeating an understrength QG roster. With no roster swaps, they looked to improve on their performance in Spring, but coming up against the number one team in China it was always going to be a tough task.
Game one saw Zero’s Bard take over the game as he hit crucial Cosmic Bindings and Tempered Fates to upset RNG in Uzi’s debut game. The pivotal moment in the game unsurprisingly began in the bottom lane as MLXG looked to gank Uzi and Mata’s lane. Unfortunately, he walked over a ward and Condi was ready to counter gank. WE's top laner, 957, managed to cancel Looper's teleport turning the fight back in WE's favor.
Zero ended the game 1/2/18 in an MVP performance, but that would prove to be a short victory as RNG took command of the rest of the series. The second game showed why you should never give Uzi Sivir as he proceeded to tear WE apart in a clinical display. The RNG pick/ban also deserves to be highlighted as we saw a composition centered around giving Swain the mobility to enter fights reliably thanks to the speedups from both Sivir and Mata’s Karma. This proved critical as WE had no answer to the Swain and RNG took game 2.
Game 3 was a little bit less clinical from RNG, but once again the story was the RNG bot lane as Uzi picked up several clean up kills on Ezreal in some sloppy fights from both sides. WE managed to stall the game out long enough for their hyper carries in Kassadin and Caitlyn to get some items under their belts but ultimately could not find a way to kill Uzi’s Ezreal as he carried RNG to a 2-1 victory.
