Several months ago I found myself getting quite annoyed with the way that Riot and their LoLEsports account is treating the Eastern League of Legends scene.
As Riot managed to take OGN/LCK away from the ongamenet twitch stream that forced viewers to a subscription to watch games in HD and taking the LPL to their own stream too, it all seemed great. We are now able to watch the best leagues in HD without having to wait for the Vods to appear on youtube.
Now that Riot obtained these 2 big assets, what are they doing with it beside showing the content? Nothing. They are doing nothing, their tweets regarding these 2 huge competitions are limited to none and their website is a joke when it comes to content for these competitions.
The only person paying attention to the LCK and LPL is @Leagueofemily and I appreciate her content releases dearly. For more LCK content we are having several 3rd party websites and videos coming out of Montecristo.
LPL related content is covered a bit more, as far as I know but I can be wrong. China talk hosted by Froskurinn, Incoming Agression, Karon Moser her articles and I myself am also writing LPL related articles for LCSFanzone.com Don’t forget the translated interviews that are released on Goldper10.
From everyone mentioned here, all the content, except for Emily, the content is not released by the “official” LoLEsports website.
A month ago I send LoLEsports a email regarding my dislikes towards their “biased” way of tweeting and content release on their website. Unfortunately, no answer was given, as expected.
I am quite dissapointed, to say the least, about the way that they are handling this situation. Now when you take a look at their twitter account, there is a lot of activity during LCS matches and even promotion/challenger matches. Don’t get me wrong, I love it, I enjoy how they interact with the fans and get their tweets on the stream etc.
Why can’t this happen during the other competitions? Don’t Doa and Monte deserve some form of respect coming out of LoLEsports for their fantastic work covering the LCK? Wouldn’t it be great to have fans tweet #SKTWIN or #CJWIN before matches and have live discussions that is backed by a official Riot source such as LolEsports?
How about the LPL team, the entire production crew and casters like Papasmithy, Spawn, Pastrytime and Atlus, don’t they deserve the same? There are a ten thousands of people watching the English streams and over a million watching the Chinese/Korean streams. These are the fans, the people that follow these Eastern competitions. Their tweets wouldn’t be for them alone but also for the ones who are not aware of the games that are going on.
Now, as today was the 3rd/4th place match between Invictus Gaming vs Snake, it shocked me that LoLEsports did not even take a minute of their time to tweet about this match. Kakao and Rookie are playing for Invictus Gaming, these are the current OGN/LCK champions but not as much of a tweet came out of “The official #LeaguofLegends esports Twitter account!”. What did came out of this fraud account was a tweet that the EU LCS Summer promotion matches were being played followed up with the usual LCS tweets.
One last thing that I got to say is that tomorrow is the big final between Edward Gaming and LGD Gaming. A final to crown the Spring Split Champion and a ticket for MSI.
Imp vs Deft, Pawn vs GodV(We1less). World champions are playing tomorrow and not as much as a reminder.
I find this huge shown of disrespect to the entire Eastern LoL scene and it’s watchers.

I don't find it great that the HD is free, because it's a lower quality HD than was previously offered and I never really had problems subbing to OGN. Riot's always been biased about this kind of thing though, just look at how neglected Chinese coverage is at worlds.
They also don't cover stuff like Demacia cup in English which kind of sucks.

I think this is just how it goes for Western coverage. They already have 2 continents with countless amounts of contents varying from the top competitive play to the more domestic league to the more recreational videos. While they don't cater to the largest viewing party in the world, they do, however, have to cover alot of content. They are also still expanding inside, trying to get a larger fan- and consumer base. I don't know how the coverage is in Korea and China for their respective regions, but think about this: how much does the Chinese and Korean scene cover of Western LoL? Yes, Riot might've monopolized the live coverage of (almost?) all competitive play, but I don't particularly see a huge problem with that, nor with the fact they don't cover the other regions as much. Firstly, it makes you more able to navigate (and make you more extensively familiarized with) the foreign scene. Secondly, the people that do make the content for these regions, catering to the west are getting the recognition they deserve. Thirdly, it makes for some "unexpected" competition during Worlds and other international tournaments (for the viewers ofcourse)

Perhaps you are missing the point here that it isn't about how much the asian region cover the LCS. We are talking about a twitter account that states that they are "The official #LeaguofLegends esports Twitter account!". They are not living up to their motto and aside from their coverage of the LCS, the last 3 worlds finals were between Asian teams.
They should be forced to cover a region that has dominated the past 3 world championships.
Look you and I both live in countries that are internationally club wise shit at football yeah, our teams never reach the Champions League second round and in the Euro League we suck too, but we cover Spain,England,Germany and Italy because that is where the best football is being played. It is being covered for our amusement and to stay informed on how the top teams are performing.

Of course it's biased? It's supposed to be catered towards the Western audience, and guess what, the Western audience is biased towards watching Western content. It's advertised as Riot's league, but Riot has Eastern divisions too which do their own advertisement in their own regions. It's not like this acquisition changed anything about how much exposure LCK/LPL got in the West. Actually, viewership for LPL has skyrocketed as far as Western audiences go and that is not debatable. I'm not sure what the deal was with OGN and if they lost a lot of revenue from losing their subs, but having free HD just makes it a better viewing experience. It's magnitudes better than it was last year. It's not their job to provide equal coverage to the regions.

Free HD still a worse viewing experience

um what did you expect? the western lcs scene is their vehicle for western marketing. their twitter is not going to be focused on literal whos but on the recognizable western stars.

Unfortunately, this thread/OP is just a reflection of idealism vs. reality. Riot could do a lot better in regards to their coverage of the eastern regions (l0l @ LPL, still. After three seasons now, no less), but I'm not sure if they deem it important enough to throw more resources and time at it. LCS this season has improved immensely imo compared to last and it's no surprise that Riot's esports department puts their priority there.
That said, you put out good/fun articles during this LPL playoffs, loltribble. Keep up the good work~

Plus one for me on this one. Thank you for your articles! I don't always agree with some of China talk and your articles but I appreciate both for their work on exposure of the lpl.

Yea, it's just a natural result of NA/EU being their babies.
Keep up the work! The articles are appreciated!

Also, I do agree with Neo and Kiss, I absolutely like the small LPL tidbits and previews and such posted here, keeps me informed and even made me interested (albeit a small bit) in the Chinese scene. So they are definitely appreciated.
Also, you have to understand who does the coverage of the FIFA if you want to be analogous. It's not FIFA themselves, it's the sports channels who have relations with FIFA (I guess, I'm really not that informed on how all that works) and get the rights to broadcast the best soccer BECAUSE the sport is so big on an international level. Esports is still growing.

I wasn't being sarcastic for once in my life ^^ I really appreciate the feedback. All I got on reddit was ppl telling me to shut up

SHUT UP + Show Spoiler + Anyway, to continue on the matter, I also don't think you can just spout out content or stacked matchups endlessly, because most of the western audience already has their trusted LCS games they watch and to expand on that even more might use up too much time for the casual viewers. I think the -whatever division of riot PR or not- has already analyzed how to keep their fanbase strong and where it is, and if they would find out it would grow or they would be able to cash in even more with their Twitter account by adding contect of the Asian scene.

Let me catch up on your previous post.
So the FIFA is the worldwide organisation for football and it is divided in organisations per continent so the UEFA is Europe, let's take that as an example.
UEFA = LCS = Europe, but in football there are a ton of competitions going down which are covered by the country itself where it is being held. Now the UEFA does cover some big matches like AC Milan vs Inter Milan or Barcalona vs Real Madrid as an exception.
My point is that I understand how that twitter account focusses on LCS but you can have multiple people on twitter, and hey even the OPL got it's own twitter account, why can't riot make a twitter account for the LPL and LCK and assign people to it? I know a lot of people who are active in the scene and get a lot of respect and appreciation that release content related to these 2 regions.
That being said, they got 4 casters for the LPL , offer them a job in covering the LPL and the content related to the LPL. There are also a lot of translators out there like Ivorybells(LGD's Media Manager) and Rachel(she translates interviews for gold per 10).
The reason why I wrote this part is because their twitter account states that they are the home of LoLEsports, which they are clearly not. They are the home of LCS, if I had to rant on about lolesports.com then I wouldn't be able to fit it all in 1 post here I think.
|
I really miss the translations (they seem to have slowed down so I'm guessing Rachel/HyperST have been busy with other stuff). Niukasaur has also been giving lots of great content as well. It's probably because liquidlegends is a lot more informed than most other sources but I felt we have some healthy coverage of the Eastern scenes here. One thing I would like to see more is just about the personalities and the inner workings of these orgs/players. For example, what's going on with Cool? Any info on the Koreans of VG? Who's buying VGP's spot. All those are the juicy juicy drama that tends to add a lot more interest in a scene than "This team is really talented" which is pretty much the standard in LPL.

Then what was the point of them taking it over, if they were then just going to ignore it?

But at least they have official EN casters now! huehue

I guess they could do more, but I have to agree with the comments already posted about the Western audience really only caring about western teams. I also preferred watching OGN in 1080p rather than 720p.
I have to say, the LPL English broadcast has improved drastically from the beginning of the split. Not only are the casters much better, but they restream the LPL's view of the game. So you can see player reactions and have a better observer watching the game.
