This season hasn't quite started the way that we've wanted. After a promising boot camp in Korea, we thought Winterfox would storm into the NALCS – surging and confident, ready to crush our opposition. Unfortunately, due to visa issues and inconsistent play, our roaring start was more of a whimper. No one enjoys losing, but dropping games that you expect to win makes the losses all the more bitter. To their credit, our players have shown a lot of resiliency through our more troubling losses and they’ve yet to lose their optimism. Our bright spots have been cause for celebration, and we're not in crisis-mode yet.
We are, however, hoping to address some issues as we go into Week 7. We’ll be making some sizeable roster changes this week, effective immediately. Hyeonsu “Imagine” Jang will be moved to a substitute role; Johnny “Altec” Ru will take over for him at the support position and Head Coach Hyun-il “Paragon” Choi will be moving off the sidelines and into the rift at the ADC position. These changes are driven by player input, and are in pursuit of a renewed team environment to head off negativity.
Player Manager Ryan Armendariz had this to say about the role swap:
“Following our recent performances, it has become clear to us that we need to alter our team dynamic if we want to meet our goals in the future. We have identified many of our weaknesses and are going to move to remedy them in the coming weeks. Accordingly, we will be making our first set of changes in hopes of putting up a better showing going into Week 7.
The main difference you will notice this week is Altec will be playing Support, not ADC. We want to stress to our fans and the community that this change was at the request of Altec, as so far we have been pleased with his performance. As some of you might imagine, being tasked as the damage backbone of a team can be quite stressful. This has, over the weeks, taken a toll on Altec and for the benefit of his resolve, he has requested to change positions.
That leaves us having to fill our starting ADC position. Stepping into Altec’s shoes this week will be Paragon. He will be stepping down from his position as coach and into a player position on our team. Having played ADC in OGN, we are confident Paragon will be capable of filling the very large void Altec is leaving behind.“
Altec had this to say:
“Why I decided to change roles to support is that, I felt like sometimes I couldn't do anything productive in our matches and it was stressing me out. We decided to use Paragon as ADC because he was a former pro ADC player and he has been with us for three weeks already, coaching and playing with us. Being in the support role I can also be a lot more vocal. It's easier for me to transition to support because I know the technique of playing ADC. Even though some of you guys think I am a good ADC, I think that I can be as good as a support player as well. Moving forward I will be trying my hardest to learn and improve on being a support.”
These changes, however, will be monitored closely, with our other performance shortcomings not being overlooked. If the team feels that this change doesn't provide the expected re-invigoration and improvement, further changes will be considered. We very sincerely wish to thank you, our fans, for your patience and support. We'll do our best to close out the season strong and make a playoff push!
